Kloster – en levende landsby unikt placeret
In September 2021 the town council adopted a master plan for Kloster with the title: ”Kloster – en levende landsby unikt placeret” (Kloster – a living village, uniquely located)
The approval followed a long collaboration between institutions, associations and residents in the area, in consultation with professionals at the municipality.
The master plan consists of 4 strategic themes and 7 specific focus areas.
4 strategic themes
- Unique location
Surrounded by water from the sea, the fjords and the river, and midway between Søndervig and Ringkøbing, Kloster has many of the municipality’s major tourist attractions close by. A unique location that can be put to use for both settlement and tourism. - Climate-conscious beautification
Kloster is also affected by climate change, and by meeting the challenges with deliberate climate adaptation, Kloster can be beautified and enriched with green oases and recreational links with great biodiversity. - Across generations
Relationships across generations help strengthen the sense of community in the village. Being a familiar face, and having others know your name, brings joy and well-being to each individual – both young and old. - Sustainable tourism
Kloster’s unique location is put to use by focusing on sustainable tourism, with a special focus on opportunities for children and young people to be active. Varied activities and attractions can help challenge, develop and entertain young people – whether you live locally or are visiting.
7 focus areas
- Linking Holmsland’s assets with paths
- Varied types of housing for everyone
- The school and the sports hall
- The church and Æ Pold
- Ragna Tangs Plads and the climate park
- The tourism district and the new location of Brugsen (the supermarket)
- Green links and a safe route to school

Working groups
After a couple of public meetings at Holmsland Idræts- og Kulturcenter and at Holmsland Skole, 5 working groups were set up in spring 2022 to turn the 7 focus areas into concrete plans.
Below you can read about the 5 working groups and their status in autumn 2023.
Klostervej – a safe road and paths
As reported in the daily press, the wish to beautify Klostervej and at the same time make it a safer route to school came to nothing. Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality originally helped the working group prepare sketches of a future version of Klostervej, which were shown at the culture centre, among other places. The Technical and Environmental Committee later declined to co-fund the project, so it could not go ahead.
The working group disbanded itself in summer 2023, and no work has been done on the separate focus area “Linking Holmsland’s assets with paths”.

Sketches
Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality drew up some proposals for how Klostervej could look with chicanes. Sketches including legends can be downloaded here as high-resolution JPG files.

Kloster Syd
A working group has worked to get a local plan drawn up for “Kloster Syd”, roughly the area where there used to be footgolf. A local plan is a precondition for building a new Brugsen.
A local plan has been drawn up together with the municipality’s planning department, and it is expected to be approved by the town council in January 2024.
The working group has thus fulfilled its purpose, and Kloster Syd is entering a new phase, because the development work is not over yet. A new working group has formed whose tasks include raising just under DKK 5 million so that we can realise Realdania and Ny Carlsbergfondet’s project “Stedet Tæller X”.

Climate lake
A working group looked at whether a climate lake could be created between Kløvermarken and Strædevej. A climate lake would ease the problems with rising groundwater in Kloster and at the same time form part of a new recreational area. Several options have been explored, but the working group has not been able to acquire the project site, so the project has been shelved.
Instead, the working group has teamed up with the volunteers who maintain Sogneparken, and work is now under way to combine Sogneparken with the rainwater basins being built at the end of Nørbyvej in autumn/winter 2023.
Seasonal housing
There is a shortage of rental housing for the many people who come here to work in the tourism industry during the summer months. A working group has looked into setting up a cabin village in Kloster, but unfortunately this has not led to workable solutions.

Æ Pold
There are already plans for what will happen to the area in front of the church once the current Brugsen building is gone. Among other things, Brugsen will leave a large gap in the churchyard wall, which must be restored.
The roundabout is expected to be kept, with more parking spaces added where Brugsen used to be.
